Lake of the Week: Lake Ponemah

Oct. 28, 2026 | Written by: Kennedy Christensen

Welcome back to Lake of the Week! We've visited Lake Fenton and Lobdell Lake so far, and this week I'm staying close to home with one of the bigger all-sports lakes on the Fenton side of town: Lake Ponemah.

What Makes Lake Ponemah Special

Ponemah sits in Fenton Charter Township, about two and a half miles from downtown Fenton. At about 410 acres (Michigan's Named Inland Lakes), it's a great fit if you want room to boat. It's listed as an all-sports lake in the Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce area lakes guide, so tubing and cruising are part of everyday summer life here.

Want a slower ride? A slow-no wake channel connects Ponemah to Aanikegamaa Lake (formerly Squaw Lake), and the Michigan DNR keeps the connected canals and channels at slow-no wake speed. If you don't live on the water yet, the DNR boat launch off North Road has a hard-surface ramp, 35 parking spaces and restrooms, and a Recreation Passport is required (Outdoor Michigan).

Who It's a Good Fit For

  • All-sports boaters. Open water for tubing and cruising, with a quiet channel when you want to slow down.
  • Buyers who want options. Homes range from canal-front and shared-frontage lots to homes right on the main lake, so frontage and dock rights vary from one home to the next.
  • Anyone who loves being close to town. Downtown Fenton is an easy drive for dinner.

One thing I always check on Ponemah is schools. Current listings show some homes in Lake Fenton Community Schools and others in Fenton Area Public Schools, so I confirm the district address by address.

A Tip for Sellers

If you own on Ponemah, spell out your frontage type before you list: main lake, canal or shared. Buyers compare these closely. Note the water depth at your dock and the condition of any seawall, and pull together permit records for shoreline work, since seawalls and permanent docks generally need an EGLE permit. Confirm your school district up front too. It's one of the first questions buyers ask, and having clear answers ready builds trust and keeps your sale moving.

What's on the Market Right Now

As of Oct. 28, my Lake Ponemah waterfront search shows 2 homes for sale and none pending, listed from $79,900 to $419,900. You can browse the current Lake Ponemah listings here, and my full Lake Ponemah guide covers riparian rights, township rules, utilities, flood maps and FAQs.

Thinking about buying or selling on Lake Ponemah, or on any of our Genesee County area lakes? I'd love to help.
