Lake of the Week: Lake Fenton
Oct. 14, 2026 | Written by: Kennedy ChristensenEach week I'm featuring one of our area lakes, and I couldn't think of a better place to start than Lake Fenton. It's one of the best-known waterfront addresses in Genesee County, and it's a lake I love showing.
What Makes Lake Fenton Special
On Lake Fenton you can boat all day, watch the sunset from your dock, and still be about 3.5 miles from the center of Fenton and 12 miles from downtown Flint (Wikipedia). Fun fact: it was originally called Long Lake, and its current name became official in 1932.
Summer here is all about the water. The Michigan DNR stocks the lake with walleye and oversees the public boat launch, the Lake Fenton Sailing Club offers a way to learn to sail, and Skipper Bud's marina runs the only gas station on the lake (Lake Fenton POA). Fenton Township sets a 45 mph speed limit, with a slow/no-wake zone through the south-end narrows and a designated no-anchor area.
Who It's a Good Fit For
- Boaters, sailors, and anglers. Between the walleye, the sailing club, and gas right on the water, there's something for everyone.
- Families. The lake gave its name to Lake Fenton Community Schools, though some lake-area homes fall in Fenton Area Public Schools, so we'll confirm the district for each address.
- Commuters. You get lake life with an easy drive up Fenton Road to Flint.
- Buyers who want lake living without main-lake frontage. Homes near the lake, or on nearby Petts or Crooked Lake, can offer the lakeside lifestyle too.
A Tip for Sellers
If you own on Lake Fenton, start gathering the details buyers always ask about before you list: your frontage, water depth at the dock, seawall condition, and any permits. Seawalls and permanent docks generally need an EGLE permit (EGLE dock handout), so having those records ready builds trust. And dig out your summer photos. Even if you list in winter, they help buyers picture the lifestyle.
What's on the Market Right Now
As of Oct. 14, my Lake Fenton waterfront search shows 15 homes: 12 for sale and 3 pending. The 12 for sale are listed from $599,900 to $4,000,000. You can browse the current Lake Fenton listings here, and my full Lake Fenton guide covers riparian rights, township rules, schools, and FAQs.
